How much does digital marketing cost?

Nobody publishes a straight answer to this, including most agencies. Here is what the available 2026 data says the market charges, where those numbers come from, and how to judge the quote in front of you.

Short answer. Published 2026 benchmarks put most ongoing agency retainers between roughly $2,500 and $30,000 a month, with small-business engagements clustering around $5,000 to $10,000. Single-channel work starts lower. Advertising spend is almost always separate from the management fee, and forgetting that is the most common budgeting error we see.

First, an honest caveat about this data

Almost every published figure on agency pricing comes from agencies, which is a little like asking restaurants to benchmark the price of dinner. There is no audited industry survey. So treat everything below as directional rather than authoritative, and read it as a range of what the market advertises rather than what every buyer actually pays. Every source is linked at the bottom so you can check the numbers yourself.

What agencies charge by tier

The clearest pattern across 2026 pricing guides is tiering by breadth rather than by quality.

Agency tier Typical monthly retainer What it usually buys
Boutique or single channel From about $2,500 One channel, executed properly, limited strategy
Mid-market, multi-channel $7,500 to $15,000 Several channels coordinated, some strategy
Enterprise $15,000 to $30,000+ Breadth, governance, scale, account management

What it costs by company size

Company size Typical monthly spend on an agency
Small business $1,500 to $5,000
Growing SMB $5,000 to $10,000
Mid-market $10,000 to $20,000
Large enterprise $20,000 to $50,000+

What it costs by service

Most buyers do not buy everything. These are the two most commonly quoted lines.

Service Typical monthly fee Notes
SEO $1,500 to $10,000 Below roughly $1,500 you are usually buying reporting, not work
Paid search and social management $800 to $5,000, or 15 to 20 per cent of ad spend The percentage model means your fee rises as you scale spend
Advertising spend Separate Almost never included in the retainer. Budget both

What the same work costs in different markets

This is the part most buyers ask about privately and few guides state plainly. Rates differ sharply by where the team sits.

Market Typical monthly retainer Notes
United States $2,500 to $30,000, most SMB work $5,000 to $10,000 Highest of the three
United Kingdom About £3,000 to £10,000+ for growing businesses Broadly comparable to the US
India ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 at the budget end, ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,00,000 for growth and mid-market, ₹4,00,000 to ₹10,00,000+ for premium and enterprise work Serious agencies generally start around ₹75,000 a month

We are based in India and work with brands in the US, UK, Europe and Canada, so we have an obvious interest in how you read that table. Here is the honest version anyway, and it is not the one the outsourcing pitch usually makes.

The gap is narrower than the stereotype suggests, because the stereotype is built on the budget end of the market. Published 2026 guides put most serious Indian agencies between roughly ₹75,000 and ₹10,00,000 a month, with premium performance agencies in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR charging ₹4,00,000 to ₹10,00,000+ and network agencies higher still. At current rates that upper band overlaps US and UK pricing directly. The very cheap end exists, but it is cheap for the usual reason: junior people, templated work, and volume. The same guides that advertise low offshore rates also note that the saving is frequently consumed by rework.

So the useful question is not which country, it is which tier, and who is actually doing the work. A lower rate is only a saving if the work does not have to be done twice. Judge the people, not the postcode.

What actually moves the number

Six things explain most of the spread between a $3,000 quote and a $20,000 one for apparently similar work.

  • How many channels. Every added channel adds coordination cost, not just execution cost.
  • Who actually touches the work. A senior strategist on your account every week is a different cost base from a junior executing a template.
  • Whether strategy is included. Many retainers are execution only, with the thinking billed separately or not done at all.
  • Content and creative volume. Production is usually the largest variable line.
  • How competitive your category is. Harder markets need more work for the same movement.
  • Reporting depth. A dashboard is cheap. Analysis that changes a decision is not.

How to tell whether the quote in front of you is reasonable

Price alone tells you very little. These six questions tell you a great deal, and they work on any proposal.

  • Does it separate the management fee from advertising spend, in writing?
  • Does it name who does the work and at what seniority, or just the agency?
  • Is the scope specific, or does it say something like social media management?
  • What does month one produce, and what does month six produce? If the answer is the same, it is a subscription rather than a plan.
  • What happens at 90 days if it is not working?
  • Did they quote before or after looking at your business? Anyone pricing before diagnosis is guessing.

Why we do not publish a rate card

For the reason in that last bullet. Two businesses asking for the same service can need entirely different work, and a published price would be wrong for at least one of them. We scope and quote after a short audit, which is also how we find out whether you need us at all. That process is set out on the digital services page, and the honest comparison of agencies, freelancers and in-house teams sits there too.

Questions people actually ask

How much does digital marketing cost per month?

Published 2026 benchmarks put most ongoing agency retainers between roughly 2,500 and 30,000 US dollars a month. Small businesses typically spend 1,500 to 5,000, growing SMBs 5,000 to 10,000, mid-market companies 10,000 to 20,000, and large enterprises 20,000 and above. Single-channel work starts lower. These are advertised ranges from agency pricing guides rather than an audited survey, so treat them as directional.

Is advertising spend included in an agency retainer?

Almost never. The management fee and the media budget are normally separate lines, and some agencies charge 15 to 20 per cent of ad spend as the management fee, which means the fee rises as you scale. Always confirm in writing which one you are being quoted, because this is the single most common budgeting mistake.

Why is the range so wide?

Because the label hides the work. The main drivers are how many channels are involved, how senior the people touching your account are, whether strategy is included or only execution, how much content and creative is produced, how competitive your category is, and how deep the reporting goes. A 3,000 quote and a 20,000 quote can both be fair for genuinely different scopes.

Is an agency in India cheaper than one in the US or UK?

Less than most people assume, once you compare like for like. Published 2026 guides put most serious Indian agencies between roughly 75,000 and 10,00,000 rupees a month, with premium agencies in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR charging 4,00,000 to 10,00,000 and above, which overlaps US and UK pricing at the top end. There is a genuinely cheap tier below that, but it is cheap for the usual reasons: junior staff, templated work and volume, and the same guides note that those savings are often consumed by rework. Compare tiers and the people doing the work, not countries.

How much should a small business budget for digital marketing?

On published benchmarks, 1,500 to 5,000 US dollars a month for agency fees, plus a separate advertising budget if you intend to run paid media. Below roughly 1,500 a month for SEO you are usually buying reporting rather than work, so it is often better to fund one channel properly than three channels thinly.
