The Kautuka Files

The highest-converting thing you can do is still a room.

This is an awkward thing for a digital agency to write down, so let us get it over with. For a great many businesses the single highest-converting activity available is still putting thirty of the right people in a room for an hour. Not thirty thousand impressions. Thirty people.

The reason is not nostalgia. Attention online has become cheap to buy and almost impossible to hold, while an hour of somebody's undivided presence has become scarce enough to mean something. A buyer who spends an evening with you has done something no retargeting sequence can manufacture.

You can buy a million impressions. You cannot buy an hour of undivided attention, which is exactly why it still converts.

Why it got written off

Because events are hard to measure, expensive per head, and do not sit neatly in a dashboard. Twelve people attended, and three of them became clients eighteen months later by a route attribution will never reconstruct. Next to a channel that reports instantly that looks like a poor investment, right up until you audit where your best clients actually came from.

It also fits how buying now works. Since the decision is mostly made before anyone contacts you, the real question is where that quiet deciding happens. Sometimes a forum. Sometimes a colleague. Often a dinner at which somebody credible said you were worth a conversation.

Small, specific, repeated

The version that works is deeply unfashionable. Not a conference. A roundtable of eight people with the same problem. A workshop where everyone leaves with something built. A quarterly dinner with no presentation at all. Specific beats large, and repeated beats spectacular, because the second one is worth more than the first: people arrive already knowing each other.

The digital half still does most of the lifting, from the invitation to the follow-up to the recording that becomes the thing your buyers would rather watch. That is the honest position. The digital work is the engine, and a room is sometimes the thing it should be driving people towards.
